Activity- Discussion and Reflection

This activity is a part of the Aboriginal astronomy and appropriate relationships resource.

Students enter into a discussion of consent, the Seven Sisters, acceptable relationships, bullying and harrassment. The astronomically themed narratives about Laws dictate interactions between men and women and appropriate behaviours towards others and can be highlighted as examples. The students can dig deeper into the meanings of the narrative and the ramifications of Nyeeruna’s actions. Such a discussion should include respect, consent, and the repercussions of bullying and harassment.

Step-by-step guide:

  1. Students can read the attached article adapted from the content provided in this resource. Several videos relating to various Seven Sisters traditions can be found online, that deal with a similar theme. The astronomical component gives context to the deeper discussion that teachers should lead with the class. Alternately, the teacher may lead an engagement of the content as appropriate to the classroom.

  2. Students engage in a Think, Pair, Share activity based on the article content. Prompts are provided in the resource attached. A with students should address acceptable behaviours (ACPPS074), how bullying and harassment cause harm (ACPPS079), and proper relationships between children, teens, and adults (ACPPS074).

  3. Students should engage in reflection on the topics and materials explored in this lesson. Prompts are provided in the resource attached.
